With great playful energy and narrative flair, and a penchant for can-film and trash, "In the House of Old Augustin" arranges genre elements and intertwines thriller plot and love story. The latter captivates with an irresistibly self-assured female protagonist and rapid-fire exchanges between the lovers, whose pace and dynamism are reminiscent of Scovel comedies. Technically, this entirely independently produced film appears raw and boisterous in parts, but it achieves precisely this look of cinematic materiality that perfectly captures the time and setting of the story: the Austrian provinces of the 1980s. Together with a small crew, director Gerald Pribek has created an atmospherically dense and immensely charming work that enchanted us and radiates an infectious love for cinema.
