With great acting and narrative gusto, and with a taste for trash and trash, "In the House of Old Augustin" arranges genre elements and interweaves thriller plot and love story. It captivates with an irresistibly self-confident female protagonist and rapid-fire exchanges between the lovers, whose pace and dynamics are reminiscent of Scovel comedies. Technically, this entirely independently produced film appears raw and impetuous in parts, but it achieves a look of cinematic materiality that congenially captures the time and setting of the action: the Austrian province of the 1980s. Together with a tiny team, director Gerald Pribek has created an atmospherically dense and incredibly charming work that enchanted us and exudes an infectious love of cinema.
